Claptone’s previous release on Exploited arrived on August, 2017, making ‘Doing The Disco‘ his first release on the label in nine years. The connection between the producer and Exploited, however, goes back much further. Claptone’s early catalogue on the Berlin imprint includes some of the tracks that remain closely associated with both his sound and the label.
A look at Exploited’s current Beatport Top Ten makes that history particularly clear. ‘Another Night’, ‘No Eyes’, and ‘Cream’ currently sit among the label’s top tracks. Now, Claptone is picking up that relationship again with ‘Doing The Disco‘, a track that has reportedly been part of his DJ sets for more than a year.
The record brings The Mekanism into the picture, while Jorge Bezerra contributes percussion and Tom Barfod provides an alternative saxophone replay of Gary’s Gang’s ‘Do It At The Disco‘.
Musically, ‘Doing The Disco’ leans into a percussion-heavy groove, with bright hats, bongos and a rolling rhythm building around a series of loops. Rather than pushing for a dramatic peak, the track develops through its individual elements gradually locking together, giving it the kind of persistent momentum that makes sense in a DJ set.
