Åre:gone is Havana-born but now Miami-based, having left the repression of his homeland in search of creative freedom. Before leaving, he was a core part of the national scene with both the Vórtice and Rusty Nails collectives, which promoted proper underground techno. He has been crafting his own groovy, organic, and heady sounds for a decade and was last on this label back in 2023 with his ‘Latin Lover’ EP.
‘Sorry, But I Don’t Understand’ is his fantastic opener, a spacious affair driven by deep kicks and glitchy claps scattered throughout the mix, next to warped synths and sultry spoken words. ‘Minimo Tecnico’ has a tougher undercurrent but remains stripped back. Deft details evoke deserted, post-human landscapes that keep the mind busy as the body succumbs to the rhythm of the drums.
Espacio Sonoro music school teacher William Arist has also landed here before with his Neo Groove EP in 2023. The Montevideo native operates at the heavier end of the techno spectrum on labels such as Uncage, Planet Rhythm, and Bek Audio, and also has his own label, Perseverancia Records. He kicks off with ‘Universal Language’, which mixes up tribal hits and unresolved loops that lock you in a moment where time dissolves. Closer ‘Tecnica Ancestral’ cuts loose with a jumbled off off-grid hits and wiry synths darting about the mix like pinballs. It’s cerebral, gently unhinged techno for the moments when mischief takes over.
