Cyrene’s hauntingly beautiful re-imagination of MGMT’s classic song first appeared on her debut EP of the same name, ‘Time To Pretend’.
Now Cyrene shares what she calls an “art video” for the track, based on the striking original artwork created by RUFFMERCY (Thom Yorke, Nightmares On Wax, J Dilla) and has been cut together by Flock Of Crows. The video is a kaleidoscopic collage of pillars, desert and statues from the ancient city of Cyrene (from which this mysterious artist takes her name), but in a disarming way that is reminiscent of Andy Warhol’s ability to turn old familiar images into vibrant and unusual artwork. Taking you on a mesmerising trip, the video brings RUFFMERCY’s original artwork to life in a new way, just as Cyrene’s stirring vocal delivery of Time To Pretend shines an entirely new light on the darkness of MGMT’s original lyrics.

“We’ve got the vision, now let’s have some fun”
‘Time To Pretend’ is a glorious depiction of rock star excess that could equally apply to the Cyreniacs, a gang of hedonistic philosophers formed in Ancient Greece by Aristippus, a student of Socrates. The Cyreniacs’ relentless pursuit of pleasure has influenced culture ever since, from the Romans to rock stars to our obsession with the gilded lives of the rich and famous and the fake reality of Instagram, the ultimate place to pretend.
“Cyrene takes the lyrics and reinterprets them for modern day life, love, pain and joy” – London In Stereo
