For Half Baked’s 26th release, Romanian house virtuoso Dan Andrei debuts on the label with ‘Orange Sunrise’, a three-track excursion embodying that hot summer, early-morning soundtrack, whether on the walk home or deep into the afters. The Rainbow Hill Records boss’s raw aesthetic and distinct ear for subtle nuances have earned him outings on esteemed imprints like Rhadoo, Raresh, and Petre Inspirescu’s [a:rpia:r], Cristi Cons and Vlad Caia’s Amphia, Pressure Traxx, as well as regular outings at Sunwaves, fabric, and Club Guesthouse. Arriving in September, the EP delivers a set of minimal meditations, pairing understated grooves with an emotional depth that mirrors the calm acceptance of autumn’s arrival.
‘Orange Sunshine’ begins with a pensive electric piano before a scaling bassline takes hold, as gorgeous synth melodies flutter throughout, cultivating a soundscape of beaches, heat, and sunrises. On the B-side, ‘Sticky’ digs deep into the minimal spectrum, as throbbing kick drums lead the track into a quizzical lead synth, before shakers join the concoction, injecting the mix with robotic playfulness. Finally, London duo Brainsurfers, comprising Sam Bangura and Harry McCanna, take their signature flair from their NorthSouth Records and fuse it with Andrei’s aesthetic for ‘Orange Sunshine (Brainsurfers Remix)’, a club-ready development with a distinct bass-heavy oomph and acidic seasoning.
