SONARA Records returns with a buoyant new single from founding artists David Mayer and Nico Stojan alongside co-founder Tooker. The trio launched SONARA in 2025 alongside co-founder Jay Kurahashi-Sofue, and their genre-fluid grooves have appeared on labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Connected Frontline and Gruuv, all while also establishing this label as an essential outlet for emotive, melodic house. ‘I Am’ is the trio’s latest collaborative outing for the label, a house-leaning, sun-soaked track built on the kind of effortless studio chemistry that has come to define their work together.
The artists report that ‘I Am’ was one of the easiest and lightest tracks they have made. Born from a sunny, spontaneous session full of bubbly energy, it came together quickly as a breezy ode to summer. At its heart sits a vocal sample whose origins remain a mystery but surfaced naturally in the room. Early versions repeated the refrain far more often before the trio pared it back, which gave the track a more confident personality. Its self-assured, restrained presence encouraged the producers to embrace the tune for exactly what it was and, by following the vocal’s lead, they let the music guide them until the track all but finished itself.
Lightly worn and easy to move to, ‘I Am’ rides a warm, rolling groove with a real summer glow. Crisp, springy drums and shuffling percussion set a playful pace while bright keys and airy pads catch the light overhead. The vocal drifts in and out, is never overstated, and leaves space for the groove to breathe and pull dancers into its sunny, weightless flow.
