Minx, who came out publicly in 2021, originally founded Women On Wax in 1996 as a collective/mentorship for women DJs and singers from Detroit. In 2001, the label was born with fellow Detroit artist Moodyman’s guidance, with the goal to amplify local and global talent rooted in the legacy of the city’s music. With Minx now finally getting the respect and recognition she deserves, she’s refocusing her efforts, dedicating herself to lifting up the Detroit sound and paying homage to the underground while highlighting new talent.

Women On Wax Recordings has been dormant for a bit, but she’s baaaack! We’ve sorted some music from a few of my dopest friends to present to you for Pride 2023. Queendom, Volume One, is a compilation of tracks produced with love by 5 adorable LGBTQ+ artists. We’re so happy to be back!”   — DJ Minx

The music of this new compilation is infused with the loving, upbeat, positive energy that Pride Month generates. Chicago’s Shaun J. Wright offers unconditional affection on “Reflection Protection” with the lyrics, “I’m your reflection / I am your protection / Put you on display / Love you every way.” Nita Aviance’s “Craving” reimagines the hazy, sweaty rooms in which house and techno were born with its popping drum loops and gritty acid synths.

DJ Cent, who (like Minx) has been a fixture of Detroit’s scene since the 1990s but has flown under the radar, takes us to eternal house paradise on “Coming To Heaven,” with classic, dubbed-out chords, and a super punchy groove. Debbie Graham, a soulful staple out of Atlanta who has been spinning tracks for decades, recently picked up production and showcases her natural talent on deep and funky “Free.”

Anchoring the release is DJ Minx’s “Let It Ride.” Featuring an undeniably hefty and addicting bassline, Minx once again exhibits her decades-long knowledge of what works on the dancefloor. “Take you on a ride,” her voice echoes throughout the track, beckoning listeners to join her on her journey as one of house and techno’s all-time protagonists.

DJ Minx has been a central figure in Detroit’s dance music history, learning to DJ in the late 80s, then holding a vital residency at Motor Club, and hosting long-running radio shows in the city for WGPR and CJAM. She’s been a fixture at Detroit’s Movement Festival since 2000, and after last year’s success, she was invited back to host her own stage again this year. She also performed b2b with fellow Detroit music legends Kevin Saunderson and Carl Craig at her after-party at Spot Lite, of the city’s top spaces for dance music, in which she holds a 2023 residency. This summer, Minx will light up some of the most iconic international venues in dance music, such as Berlin’s Panorama Bar and Ibiza’s Hï Ibiza.

Proclaiming her rightful rise to dance music royalty with The Throne in May, DJ Minx now aims to refocus the vision of what Women On Wax set out to do when it originally launched over 20 years ago.
