Eagles of Death Metal documentary pulled from film festival following Paris attacks
‘The Redemption Of The Devil’ will no longer screen at Amsterdam’s International Documentary Film Festival
A documentary on Eagles of Death Metal frontman Jesse Hughes has been pulled from an upcoming film festival over fears it would appear insensitive following last week’s Paris attacks.
89 people died when gunmen opened fire at the band’s gig at Le Bataclan last Friday (November 13). A total of 129 people were killed and around 350 injured after a series of violent attacks in the French capital with the music venue the worst hit.
The Redemption Of The Devil was released earlier this year and is already available to view online. However, it was due to be screened at Amsterdam’s International Documentary Film Festival until organisers decided to pull it from their program. BBC News reports the timing felt “inappropriate”.
The film was directed by Alex Hoffman and follows frontman Jesse Hughes, also an ordained Catholic minister, in the run up to the release of Eagles of Death Metal’s latest album, ‘Zipper Down’.
Eagles Of Death Metal merchandise seller, Nick Alexander was the first Briton confirmed to have been killed in the attacks. Mercury Records’ international product manager Thomas Ayad and Les InRocks reporter Guillaume B Decherf are also among the deceased.
Earlier this week, Eagles of Death Metal issued a statement to the press and fans in which they said they they are “united in grief” with the victims, fans, families and people of Paris, while confirming that all of their future live dates are on hold. They also paid tribute to Nick Alexander and the three record company staff who were killed at Le Bataclan in the terrorist attack.
Meanwhile, Eagles of Death Metal member Josh Homme has pledged to help the victims of the Paris attacks. Homme is seeking donations through his charity Sweet Stuff Foundation.
