EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH : Jean Claude Ades

Jean Claude Ades has been a fixture on the global scene for the past two decades, elevating international stages and high-profile residencies with his unique, signature take on electronic music. Currently the key resident of the legendary Sunday party at Scorpios Mykonos, Jean Claude remains true to his calling – taking dancefloors on a musical journey that transcends genre boundaries.

Written with the current turbulence in mind, Jean Claude Ades and Re.You’s new collaboration Together carries a theme of hope and unity. By blending real piano recordings with a variety of synth sounds, including Novation peak, Prophet VS and Jupiter 8V, the track creates an uplifting yet profound sound. In the words of Jean Claude, “Whether society is divided, in times of war, or experiencing the loss of love, it is only through unity that we can rediscover ourselves and our humanity.

Hi Jean Claude, thanks for chatting with us today! How’s the year treating you?

This year, I strategically dedicated the initial months to focus on studio work and growing Scorpios Music label. As the creative process is mostly done, I am now prepared to embark on upcoming tours, especially for my Sunday residency at Scorpios in Mykonos and Bodrum.

Where does your impulse to create music come from?

The impulse to create music for me stems from a rich tapestry of experiences, spanning over 25 years of listening to diverse records and immersing myself in the energy of clubs, worldwide touring, and of course for many years my own events in Ibiza. Each musical encounter has contributed to shaping my creative expression.

Your new single “Together” carries a message of unity and hope during challenging times. Can you share the inspiration behind choosing this theme for your collaboration with Re.You?

The collaboration on the single stemmed from the desire to spread a message of positivity and solidarity during these challenging times. I wanted to create a musical piece that not only resonates with listeners on an emotional level but also serves as a piece of hope and togetherness. The synergy between the creative vision and the current global issues inspired me to craft a song that shows a sense of unity and optimism, emphasizing the power of music to connect people and uplift spirits.

Blending real piano recordings with synth sounds creates a distinct sonic experience in “Together.” How did you and Re.You decide on this particular blend of instruments, and what was the process like?

I recorded the track about 2 years ago, but I hesitated to release it because I had too many versions and couldn’t decide which one was the best. One day, I had a chat with Re.You and spontaneously asked him if he wants to do a remix. He loved the track and agreed. When I heard his remix, I loved the bassline and beats, so we decided to create a fusion of my original track and his remix. We started sending stems back and forth until we achieved the perfect result. And that’s how ‘Together’ was born.

Over the past two decades, you’ve been a significant presence in the electronic music scene. How do you keep your music fresh and engaging, ensuring it resonates with both long-time fans and new listeners?

I quickly lose interest in following trends and constantly seek new formulas and styles to innovate my music. By blending vintage elements with contemporary sounds, I aim to create a unique sonic experience. Moreover, the evolution of mixing and engineering techniques has significantly impacted the sound frequency, allowing me to explore new styles in my music production.

The legendary Sunday party at Scorpios Mykonos has become synonymous with your name. What makes this residency special to you, and how does it influence your music?

For me, it’s a homecoming experience, and I feel extremely confident because I have a clear understanding of the music that resonates at Scorpios. The eclectic atmosphere at Scorpios allows me to explore a diverse range of music, creating a unique and unforgettable vibe that sets it apart from other venues.

As someone who has seen the evolution of electronic music over the years, how do you think the genre has changed in terms of production techniques and audience expectations?

I have observed significant changes in production techniques and audience expectations within the genre. The advancements in mixing techniques have revolutionized the sonic landscape, offering a diverse range of possibilities for artists. Additionally, the proliferation of sub-genres within electronic music has expanded the creative spectrum, presenting both opportunities and challenges. While the multitude of genres can be overwhelming at times, it also provides a rich platform for artists to explore and release music that caters to diverse preferences and tastes.

Scorpios Mykonos is described as a place that galvanizes the artistic, spiritual, and social life of the community. How do you contribute to this vision through your performances and music?

At Scorpios Mykonos, I always want to enhance the artistic, spiritual, and social ambiance through my performances and music. By curating an experience that resonates with the audience and creates a sense of community, I aim to contribute to the vibrant atmosphere that defines Scorpios.

Looking to the future, are there any new projects or directions you’re excited to explore in your career?

I am genuinely excited about exploring new projects and directions in my music career. One area that particularly captures my interest is experimenting with cross-genre collaborations to create fresh and innovative sounds. I am also keen on digging deeper into music production and incorporating different elements and influences into my compositions. Furthermore, I want to explore opportunities for live performances and connect with audiences on a deeper level. Overall, I am enthusiastic about future possibilities and I am committed to evolving and growing as an artist.

What should we expect from you for the rest of 2024?

I am currently planning 2 more Jean Claude Ades releases on the Scorpios music label, and I am looking to expand and develop both the label and our artist agency at Scorpios. My goal is to further establish our presence in the music industry and provide a platform for talented artists to showcase their work and reach a wider audience.
