Paying homage to the classic Techno-minimalism of Robert Hood, Calais-based Fhase 87 has constructed each track on ‘Minimalism’ with layering in mind, stating that ‘I wanted to return to the origins of my influences, the spirit of the 90s. High BPM Techno, like the DJ sets that I managed to get hold of on audio tape during my adolescence, before the internet era, “No Build Up” tracks, ideal for mixing with several decks.’

Shifting from the fittingly titled ‘Minimalism 01’ to ‘Minimalism 05’, Fhase 87 uses subtle changes in tracks to hold the listener, but the density of the sounds in each hits hard. Percussive flourishes, nifty filtering, fine rhythmic interplay and complex shifts in sound design let the musicality of each track breathe while staying engaging.

Fhase 87’s ‘Minimalism’ EP is released on Symbolism on August 29th.
