Since launching the project back in 2019, the up-and-coming talent from SoCal has been gleaning influences from hip-hop and R&B, transposing them into a handful of grooves that harness a vivacious and oftentimes vicious appeal. On his double-sided single, he heads deeper down the trail leading into the latter to showcase a beefier side of his breadth within house music. “The Answer” is a buoyant number marked by springy electro synths, chunky basslines, buzzing flourishes and clever call-and-response rounding it all out. It’s a simple yet extremely effective chunk of bass house that coincidentally came to be as a response to one of Wax Motif’s revered demo listening livestreams.
On the B-side, “PsyHouse” doubles down on the bottom-end while nodding to an unexpected genre in the process. The track takes a page out of the playbook from heavy hitters in the progressive psytrance lane, a sound he admits grabbed his attention when the idea for this track first struck. The oscillating basslines handle most of the heavy lifting, keeping the vibe locked while reverberating synths and intermittent vocal chops weave in and out of the mix. Fusing one of the defining qualities of bigroom psy with his own bass-driven tendencies results in a crossbred cut that brings out the best of both worlds.
He breaks down both tracks in his own words below:
I was scrolling through Instagram when I noticed Wax Motif had posted something interesting. It was a new challenge that he started called Bassline Boss. Rules were simple: create a 1-minute track in three hours; best one wins. “The Answer” is the track that I came up with. Since I didn’t have much time to make it, I didn’t overthink the idea too much, which is why I love it.
I made this track around the time I really got into psytrance artists such as Vini Vici or Astrix. I wanted to incorporate the repetitive bass sound into a house track. So, I hopped in the studio and tried my best to design a psytrance bass. I ended up making something a little different than what I was going for, but I still loved it. Once I added it to the track, I knew it was perfect. Combined my love for psytrance with my style of house, came out perfectly.
The SoCal-based producer recently debuted on the label with his bright and hypnotic house groove, “Circles,” which was featured on the ‘Rotate’ compilation. With a duet-style vocal hook revolving around a sleek rhythm, the track quickly drew support from top-tier names from the likes of Oliver Heldens, Tchami, Claptone, CID and Don Diablo. He’s already made incredible strides in the house circuit so early on, and it’s only just the beginning.
His new ‘The Answer / PsyHouse’ two-tracker splits off into two unique directions without coming off disconnected. Here, Gibson demonstrates a punchy but well-balanced package that only helps broaden his horizons from here on out.
