We’ve always felt that we needed to release a live album to really showcase how we see and play these songs in a live setting. Recording a studio album is a great way to capture a glimpse of a moment in time, but we believe that in a live setting, songs should have the ability to grow and change, just as a band does. At this point in our life as a band, most of the songs we play at our shows are unreleased, so this was also a way to get some of those songs and ideas out into the world for the people that haven’t made it out to see a show yet.
– Steve Kiely
Golden Feather was started by drummer/vocalist Steve Kiely and Brad Germain, inspired by their love of bands that like to jam and take their listeners on a musical journey. What started out as a weekly hang for the two in Brad‘s basement recording demos, quickly turned into them having to find more like-minded musicians to help them bring their musical ideas to life. The group was set to play its first show in March 2020 when the global pandemic hit, suddenly ending all hopes of live performance. Brad and Steve, along with bassist Ronson and guitarist Chris Wheeler worked on the songs remotely and ended up recording their debut album entitled Light On Water (November 2020). Not long after its release, Gareth Inkster joined the group on keys to complete the original, definitive lineup. Chris Wheeler and the band amicably parted ways in January 2023, and part-time guest saxophonist Murray Heaton has stepped in as a new full-time member of the band to help fill the shoes left by Chris‘ departure.
Music, art, and creation as a whole, should be given space to breathe and grow. Don’t put what you do in a box. Let it turn into what it wants to turn into and magic can happen. Good, intuitive musicians, playing together and checking their egos at the door can really result in something special.
