Closing the five-track collection is “Dream of U,” a collaboration with Salt Lake City’s Malixe that captures the EP’s emotional depth and relentless energy. “Dream of U” is a symphonic whirlwind, weaving together high-strung leads, roaring Reese bass, fluttering synths, and moody vocal chops. The track’s cinematic edge is heightened by dramatic piano arrangements, bookending the adrenaline-filled drops with poignant emotional resonance. Hex Cougar’s signature blend of haunting soundscapes and visceral production takes center stage, bolstered by Malixe’s ability to channel raw energy into meticulously crafted sound design.
The release builds on the momentum of previous singles “Still In Love” and “Ultra” with the genre-defying force VARI, both of which received radio support from Zeds Dead, Illenium, and Alison Wonderland, in addition to having garnered acclaim from prime outlets like EDM.com, UKF, CULTR, and Trap City. Also featured on the EP are “Oxytocin,” a distorted, psychedelic fusion of trap and lo-fi that hits with raw intensity. Meanwhile, “Eyes”—backed by dark soundscape mastermind FATE—a glittery, melodic track that radiates upbeat energy. Together, the five tracks navigate a wide emotional range, capturing the creative resurgence at the heart of ‘Embody.’
Summing out the newfound source of creation that birthed his new body of work, Hex Cougar shares: “Embody, my sophomore EP, is symbolic of my tumultuous and emotional relationship with music over the past four years—falling out of love with it, and then slowly, patiently falling back in love. From moody and introspective to brash and aggressive, the EP covers the whole range of emotions that I’ve felt over these past few years. This is Embody.”
Hex Cougar’s visionary approach has cemented his status as a tastemaker in electronic music, earning him features in Dancing Astronaut and Magnetic Magazine, as well as support from Skrillex, RL Grime, and Porter Robinson. ‘Embody’ represents Hex Cougar’s journey through creative rediscovery. After losing his connection with music during the pandemic, the L.A.-based producer found inspiration through sound design work for feature films. The result is a collection of tracks that explore the full spectrum of emotion, from introspective melancholy to raw aggression.
Hex Cougar is running high off of his recent headline show at YOLO Nightclub in San Francisco, followed by the inaugural BREAK ROM Records label showcase at L.A.’s Echoplex. With ‘Embody,’ Hex Cougar continues to redefine the sonic boundaries of electronic music while inspiring the next wave of creators in the scene.
