Following recent releases from Claude VonStroke and Justin Jay’s ‘Oh’ EP to Nikki Nair’s ‘More Is Different’, Dirtybird White Label series #3 goes even further outside the lines. The label set out a simple mission with their new arm: to defy expectations of the current sound and continue its ethos as a formidable tastemaker. Making their debut with DIRTYBIRD, Ivy Lab are perfect additions to the collection of more left-field releases, not afraid to explore a wide range of genres within one EP alone.
Figureheads of the Future Beats movement, the EP is a collection of 4 tracks that explore all facets of the sound. From the bouncy and playful opening track “Press Play”, to Neptunes-influenced beats on ‘BBQ’, the EP shows range and skill few producers can match. ‘Dresden Codex’ sees the guys venture into futuristic acid half step, and rounding things out is the sublime drum’n’bass track ‘Options’.
The release comes ahead of the duo’s appearance at DIRTYBIRD Campout West Coast, taking place October 15-17 in Modesto, CA.
Sabre and Stray of Ivy Lab collided together out of a shared enthusiasm for experimentation in the UK bass music scene. The duo has marked their territory where leftfield bass and halftime meet hip-hop—a neighborhood characterized by the coalescences of both Los Angeles and London. In an effort to further invest in the emergence of their sound, Ivy Lab launched their 20/20 LDN imprint, which houses and supports hip-hop infused abstractions.
The release of their debut album, Death Don’t Always Taste Good, launched with single “Cake,” now a scene staple. With an ever-growing loyal audience in North America and 2 long-form dancefloor orientated projects behind them, Ivy Lab created space to experiment with more subdued productions. Throughout the latter of 2020, they delivered a string of EP releases: ‘Fidget’, ‘Teacup’, and ‘Blonde’, which broadcasted a more minimal expression of the duo.
Their 2021 EP, ‘Everythingmustchange’, shows how Ivy Lab will continue to break the mold by doubling down on under-produced minimalistic bass. Currently amidst their post-lockdown debut in the states, Ivy Lab heads into their upcoming shows and festival slots with an anchored presence in the bass scene and far beyond.
‘Press Play’ will be available for purchase on simple white vinyl with the signature original DIRTYBIRD logo, which will ship in November.
