The Dutch creative continues his quest to mix rhythms from the Caribbean and South America, translating them to contemporary global clubbers.
Multi-talented DJ, producer, remixer, singer and solo artist Jarreau Vandal returns to the club with his latest track ‘No More’, out 21st April on Hear This Records.
‘No More’ sees Vandal team up with vocalist Gayance, who delivers a sweet and melodic accompaniment (sang in Haitian Creole) to Vandal’s eclectic approach to beat making. Taking inspiration from his heritage and the Kawina music from his father’s country Suriname, Vandal builds the track around a simple electro bass line, whilst experimenting with Zouk (French Caribbean) and Kawina (Suriname) drums and rhythms.
“I actually made the link between the French Caribbean and Surinamese music way before I started this project when my friend that plays percussion on the record showed me songs like ‘Ti Milo” by Eugene Mona from Martinique and ‘Petwo’ by Haitian percussionist Jeff Pierre.” Vandal explains, “I was shocked by how similar the percussion patterns were and it showed me how hard the people taken from Africa brought to these different places in the Caribbean fought to maintain their culture and music.”
The track follows previous single ‘Ede Weri (Srananpiano)’, and is a further glimpse of Jarreau’s soon to be announced EP, on which he says: “I wanted to incorporate music from my Dad’s country Suriname with electronic music and other genres. It took me a year to finally find the sound I was really looking for.”
Having been exposed to a wide variety of musical influences right from gospel and soul to jazz and house, Vandal’s musical identity is organic as he aims to combine everything that inspires him, turning it into his own authentic, one-of-a-kind brand of music with a focus on putting out good vibes. Gaining fame for his edits, such as Rihanna’s ‘Work’ and remixes such as Dua Lipa’s ‘New Love’ and Mahalia’s ‘Sober’, which is his most streamed remix, Vandal is now ready to expand his horizons from DJ and producer to an all-rounder.
‘No More’ is vital genre-pushing work from Jarreau Vandal, continuing to set him apart from everyone else in the club scene.
