Justin Jay Checks Back into Desert Hearts with ‘You’ EP

Justin Jay has been in career overdrive, jumping back headfirst into touring and putting his vast trove of unheard music out into the world. Today, he reveals three more of these productions in the form of ‘You,’ his second full EP on Desert Hearts Records.

‘You’ showcases the left-of-center sonics that Jay has been leaning into recently, each of which are embedded in a house foundation. The vocal-laced title track kicks off the journey, leading audiences into a field of glitchy sound effects paired with subtle rave stabs. “Satellite” carries similar motifs in its arrangement, with a heavier focus on celestial arpeggios. It skates smoothly into “Nüdrug,” whose baseline animates a symphony of quirky synth effects and euphoric bursts of piano and vocal melody. Together, all three tracks are as futuristic as they are lightweight and breezy.

2021 has been a year of seminal releases for Justin Jay. Finding a new niche in the underground, he made his debut on respected tastemaking labels childsplay and the Bristol-based Shall Not Fade. He also joined with Claude VonStroke to officiate a new white label series on Dirtybird. The resulting ‘Oh’ EP boasted a Pearson Sound remix, and received praise from the likes of Test Pressing, Resident Advisor, and more. Jay has continued cultivating his own Fantastic Voyage imprint in the meantime, which has seen releases from Danny Goliger, Benny Bridges, DJ Heath, Bad Boombox and more.
