JVLY ‘aporia’

JVLY – 'aporia' - Acid Stag

Over the last few months Australian artist JVLY has given us a collection of exceptional singles – ‘tacenda’, ‘me&her’ and ‘monsoon’ – while also making promise of a new ep coming our way in 2020, but before we get to that he has one more little teaser to share with us called ‘aporia’, which also comes with a Rodrigo Badoino directed video.

JVLY creates chilled electro/R&B/soul music that has been likened to a mix between Still Woozy, Rhye and Charlotte Day Wilson, and this new single ‘aporia’ is another fine example of his masterful song-writing and production skills.

“I usually spend most time shaping all the instruments and layers, the writing tends to come further down the track for me. I didn’t write anything down for this one though, I was just playing around on the piano and singing random melodies and it sort of all worked out that way, the vocals you hear are from that first day.

I’d say that was the most satisfied I’ve ever been from finishing a song. I would’ve heard it like a hundred times while trying to wrap it up and I’m still not over it, so that’s probably a good sign. I think it mirrors the central idea of the whole EP and it captures the exact feel I wanted for this little album, the uncertainty. I couldn’t think of the right name for it, I was trying way too hard for ages and then I saw ‘aporia’ in a book and I googled it because I liked the word, it means “an irresolvable internal contradiction”. Seems to sum it up perfectly.” – JVLY

‘aporia’ also comes with a Rodrigo Badoino directed music video which uses footage that JVLY shot while in Japan a few months ago. This footage is blended with some extra material that was shot back in Sydney by Rodrigo Badoino and stars his friend Tyra Cartledge.

“I spent some time in Japan earlier this year before it all got really weird. I took an old camcorder and just shot a bunch of footage with some sort of visual in mind for this song. I didn’t really have a concept, but I knew how I wanted the shots to look. When I got back, I met up with my friend Rodrigo Badoino who is an amazing film maker. I gave him the footage I had to have a look through, and I left it in his hands to form the concept. We had a night of shooting around Sydney with Tyra Cartledge (the girl in the video) to capture the other side of the story.” – JVLY

And Rodrigo Badoino gives us some insight as well;

“We decided to use two different aspect ratios as it plays with the theme of the song. Visually you either have one or the other. Every choice from story to colour was made with this in mind. You can’t have it both ways.”

‘aporia’ is available everywhere now via Mammal Sounds Records and stay tuned for his upcoming ep which is set for release in June.
