Rising Irish rapper / musician JyellowL is poised to announce a brand new release with the arrival of ‘Appetiser’ featuring the sultry vocal talents of North London via Cyrpus singer-songwriter Antigoni, due this November.
The Dublin based artist brings an understated sensitivity to his production, fusing visionary songwriting grounded with a sonic template that feels entirely new. The natural collaboration with Antigoni brings a raw and sensual vulnerability to the soundscape, equal parts haunting as it is emotive.
JyellowL says: “This song on first listen makes you want want to move your body from the beginning to end. The creative chemistry between Antigoni and I was immediate and I think it shows how we bounce off each other and go back and forth to create this storyline. The production is banging and we all wanted to make something that merged both our styles, the result is wavey. But there’s dichotomy in the lyricism and it’s actually a paradox, because on one hand I’m saying I want something substantial from this person. I want someone to feed my soul not an “appetiser” that’ll only temporarily satisfy me but on the other hand I come across a little impatient like I’m shallowly content with rushing things to just have a taste.”
JYellowL learned from his Jamaican grandmother how to be himself in a world that wants to force you down a particular path. Born of Jamaican and Nigerian parents and raised in Ireland, his upbringing has drawn on all three origins to create a distinctly powerful sound that is radically individual.
The lyricism JYellowL delivers cuts to the heart of issues that are at once deeply personal and urgent on a global scale, driving political change right now.
His standout track ‘Ozone’ has surpassed 1.5 million views on Spotify and the single ‘Oh Lawd’, featured on the soundtrack of the ‘Normal People’ TV series, has already surpassed 1 million views. A self-driven artist and entrepreneur, his newly established JYellowL Records Ltd quickly landed a distribution deal with the international distribution company IDOL.
VICE Magazine profiled him as a leading voice of Irish rap in their 2017 Music Issue,’on the crest of a wave of young artists in Ireland with an increasingly political bent’.
JyellowL capped off what was an unpredictably challenging year with his critically acclaimed debut album 2020 D|vision which has recently been nominated for the Irish album of the year for 2020 at the RTÉ choice music prize awards and debuted at number 2 on the official iTunes album charts and number 1 in the hiphop category.
