Barcelona-based Karcelen has long been crafting deep and minimal soundscapes, as perfectly exemplified late last year by his superb ‘Jazzpanese’ album on Dreams On Wax. Now, it gets reinterpreted by a selection of underground names who are all stylistic references or close friends of his, which makes this such a unique project. They fuse a mix of old-school and contemporary sounds, all with their own identity.
The revered house talent that is Audio Werner kicks off with a remix of ‘Wanaka’ that brings seductive basslines and silky synths to rolling grooves. Resurgent tech house innovator Johnny D then offers a Dirty Remix of ‘Hentai’ that layers up popping synth details and squelchy basslines with whispered female vocals that make for a steamy and alluring vibe. Cult and veteran French minimalist Cabanne brings his signature sense of infectious and striped black rhythm to a dubby remix of ‘Shinshi’.
Dutch talent Roger Gerressen is known for his mastery of loopy rhythms, and that comes to the fore with his dubbed-out and well-swung take on ‘Kokubo’, which is marbled with liquid pads and wet hits. It is then Chapter Records boss and eclectic producer Anika Kunst who works ‘Hentai’ into a fizzing fusion of Detroit-style hi-tek soul and deeply rooted beats that work a charm. Barcleona-based YALL, aka DJ Sandwich, then rounds out with a deft touch – his ambient pads swirl around an ice-cold minimal groove to a captivating and emotive effect.
