The chatter surrounding the Seattle-based producer has been reaching record highs, and he’s only stirring up more noise as each day goes by. Kumarion is one of the catalysts driving the big drum & bass boom currently taking hold of the States, but what’s most impressive is just how quickly the young buck has managed to lay claim to such notoriety. His high-grade fusion of D&B, halftime and vasodilating beats has made him a hot ticket in the bass community and his debut release for Bassrush finds him gunning for neurofunk.
Heady yet body-bruising, “Back Talk” is riddled with all the right ingredients that put the mad man on the map. It’s a savage stepper that soaked in his ear-stimulating sound design. Clocking in at a wild nearly four-minute ride, the cut bulldozes through gnarly acid warbles, guttural bass, intense horn shots, and the most pleasing call-and-response one could possibly hope for.
“‘Back Talk’ is an aggressive drum and bass tune that combines a foghorn call paired with a growly response,” says Kumarion. “Bassrush is a dope label that has been supporting the drum and bass movement in America and I’m happy to take part in it!”
On paper, he’s only been releasing music for a mere few years. However, the project itself has been lurking in the shadows since 2015. The mastermind was waiting in the wings until he felt like the music felt bulletproof. With a sizable catalog now under his belt and a cult following on both sides of the pond, it seems as though he was on the right track all along. The support he’s landed should be evidence enough. Not only has he earned the respect of artists from the likes of RL Grime, JOYRYDE, Boombox Cartel and CloZee, but he was also praised by Billboard as an ‘Artist to Watch in 2022.’
Next month, he’s linking up with another Stateside drum & bass champ, REAPER, who has been ripping through the Bassrush label with a handful of gritty, blood-pumping tracks. They will be going shoulder-to-shoulder at Soundcheck in DC, with Bassrush hosting this specific stop on their The Uprising Tour.
Whether you’re riding the rail at the show that night, or lucky enough to catch Kumarion in the act at any of his other upcoming shows, expect “Back Talk” to shut the whole place down whenever it starts growling through the speaker stacks.
