For MEYY, Neon Angel feels like a succession of dreams, a concept she rolled out with her 3D art visualisers“‘Neon Angel’ is a compilation of songs that beautifully reflect the dreamlike state I enter when making or listening to music,” she adds. “It reflects different dimensions of my world but they all blend in perfectly through the soundscape I created together with my incredible producers. It’s a delicate project that I curated carefully and the songs were made in the intimate setting of my bedroom. To me, this project sounds like underwater flowers moving. That visualization covers the fragility and yet wavy texture of this EP.”

A four-track release, Neon Angel opens with previously released single ‘Orchids’, a sensual, ethereal R&B ballad that sets the tone. Next up is ‘Do It’, a similarly seductive collaboration with French sensation Joanna and a breathtaking display of two women embracing their sexuality with powerful conviction, and ‘hyli’, which pairs sparse, fluttering production with MEYY’s irresistible hushed vocals.

Closing out the EP is new single ‘Rain’ produced by FrancisGotHeat (Drake, Little Simz, Bryson Tiller). The track features UK rap favourite Jelani Blackman, whose instantly recognisable baritone flow makes for a stunning juxtaposition with MEYY’s delicate delivery. The collaboration follows on from MEYY supporting Jelani at Shepherd’s Bush Hall in West London earlier this year. “Can’t wait for this track to come out, especially after I heard MEYY live when she supported my show at Bush Hall a few weeks ago, the energy she brings to her music is 10/10,” Jelani enthuses.

“‘Rain’ is the last dream of my new EP ‘Neon Angel’,” MEYY adds. “It’s about diving into a new love story after a break up as falling in love is way easier than going through the hurtful process of falling out of love. I was inspired by those contradictory feelings and thoughts: do you want to be with this person or do you just not want to be by yourself? ‘Rain’ follows the narrative of enjoying that first rush new love gives, without thinking of anything else. I think the track, lyrically as well as musically, embodies that playfulness and subtle recklessness love has. Think escapism and (over)indulgence. It’s a teasing song carried by the beautiful vibe Francisgotheat put down in his production. Jelani’s verses and amazing voice melt perfectly into the song and augment its entire aesthetic to an even lushier and dreamier state.”

A singer, songwriter, producer and dancer, MEYY burst onto the scene with her acclaimed debut single ‘Angelic Lies’ in 2019. This was followed up by the similarly well-received ‘Spectrum’, an EP that amassed more than 500,000 streams and saw her win the Red Bull Elektropedia award for ‘Most Promising Artist Of 2021’.

Subverting stereotypes, Jelani Blackman’s sound blends the hard with the soft, the dark with the light, reflected in an impressively diverse rollcall of collaborators that spans from Brian Eno to Burna BoyWolf Alice to Big Zuu, and, most recently, Gorillaz and Barrington Levy.

Released in the immediate aftermath of MEYY’s integration into the London scene, Neon Angel is a landmark EP for this fast-rising artist.
