The haunting textures of Núria Graham’s latest album ‘Marjorie’ captivates with a heady mix of confessional lo-fi pop and dark abstraction. The half Irish, half Catalan artist is poised to release her most revelatory and personal body of work through Primavera Labels this spring and coincides with a series of shows and festival appearances including a headline show at The Lexington in London on 30th April. Núria pre-empts its release with an intimate live session for ‘Toilet Chronicles’ recorded for Primavera Sound at their studios in Barcelona.
She says: “Toilet Chronicles is a version of a song called “amor de garrafa” that my friend and ex-boyfriend wrote with his punk band Power Burkas. When I heard the song for the first time I had the feeling I had to reply to the song, doing a version and rewritting the lyrics. For me it is a song about pure love and friendship”
‘Majorie’ starts by saying goodbye to her native Ireland, entering a kind of family tree where real and invented characters are intertwined. We discover Núria’s grandmother Marjorie whom she never met, a mysterious character Shirley and the sad drinker Hazel. These three women represent a list of memorable characters that appear in the songs, but also reflect other voices for which Núria acts almost like a medium; her uncle Niall Graham author of the song “No returning” and a special collaboration with fellow Barcelona based punk band Power Burkas in “Toilet Chronicles”.
The video for the song “Connemara” contains some of the keys to “Marjorie”, evoking a sense of nostalgia and longing with its vérité style imagery of rural pastoral landscapes. The characters flit seamlessly in and out of the mise en scene, imagining the stories of people who seemed to be passing by.
‘Majorie’ contains some of the most rounded songs of Núria’s career, originally written on piano, drum machine and voice, thinking of classics like Todd Rundgren, Carole King or Joni Mitchell and some of her current inspirations like Cass McCombs and Angel Olsen. A mirror that returns an image halfway between the soft-rock of rarefied atmospheres and the liquid soul in the form of 10 songs arranged by Núria and Jordi Casadesús, and played live together with Aleix Bou and Artur Tort.

The half-Irish half-Catalan composer Núria Graham published her debut album “First Tracks” in 2015 with only 16 years. In just over two years, she released “Bird Eyes” + “In The Cave” (EP) and almost next her second feature “Does It Ring a Bell?” (2017), an album that positioned her on the national scene as an essential artist to understand homemade folk-pop. But during these last two years Núria has had no rest. After a tour that took her to the stages of the most relevant festivals and venues in the country with incursions into Portugal, Berlin, France and London; and after having won a place as a composer and guitarist for Amaia’s band, Núria Graham finally has new material. Something we were all waiting for. “Marjorie” is the name of her next album that will be released in 14th of February 2020.
