At the core of Under Way is a conceptual practice that treats composition as archaeology. Fragmented vocal elements, textual materials and digital detritus are lifted from their original contexts and reassembled into new formations. While not overtly hip hop in genre, the album makes clear reference to sampling culture, layered textures, and chopped vocals – all reframed through a distinctly abstract and introspective lens.

The focus track ‘Knowing’ is a dreamy, hazy four minute-long ride through cosmically-aligned synths, rippling keys and crisp percussion – the kind of cut to soundtrack balmy summer days. Powered by rugged, squelchy bass, it nods to Seis Drum’s early exposure to hip hop culture, as well as the influences of 1980s electro and early 2000s IDM. ‘Knowing’ underscores Seis Drum’s meticulous approach to sound design, capturing a mood that feels both nostalgic and fresh.

From the repeated vocal samples, low-slung dub-esque rhythms and elongated synths that comprise the arresting opener ‘Beginnings’, to the acid bassline and spacey pads of ‘Octagon’ and the funky mechanical clatter of ‘Watt Volta’, the range of influences and textures that Seis Drum assembles and sculpts into a vibrant, idiosyncratic whole lends the album a feeling of both familiar nostalgia and fresh, contemporary energy.

Seis Drum’s early exposure to hip hop culture laid a foundation for sonic exploration, while later encounters with electronica, 80s electro and industrial sound design shaped their abrasive yet meticulous approach to sound. These elements are transformed rather than referenced, processed into unpredictable, sometimes chaotic sonic layers that resist genre classification.

The album traverses an absorbing array of moods and downtempo-skewed cadences. There are moments of stirring strings and glossy keys (’Satine’), rolling percussion electrified by taught hi-hats and snares (‘Sorted’) and  bubbling drum patterns (‘Under Way’). You might draw loose parallels with the work of artists such as DJ Shadow and Madlib, but there are a myriad of other reference points at play, embedded within Seis Drum’s endlessly listenable sound design.

The album employs production methods rooted in hip hop’s legacy of sampling, editing, and stratification. Yet the approach is anything but formulaic. Each track is the product of a rigorous yet intuitive compositional process that favours spontaneity over structure, evoking a shifting relationship between control and chance.

Out now on streaming platforms, the album will be released on CD and cassette on 25 August, with the digital download available from 29 August via Bulletdodge Records.
