Simon Gregory has brought a fresh punch to Super8 & Tab and SØNIN’s celebrated track ‘Black Is The New Yellow’

As heard on Above & Beyond‘s recent album tour, Simon Gregory has brought a fresh punch to Super8 & Tab and SØNIN‘s celebrated track ‘Black Is The New Yellow’. Originally released on Anjunabeats in 2010, the track quickly became a fan favourite, and Simon’s new remix gives it a modern trance update while staying true to the iconic melody.

We sat down with Miika and Janne (Super8 & Tab), SØNIN, Simon Gregory, and Above & Beyond’s Jono Grant to talk all things ‘Black Is The New Yellow’ – the track’s origins, memorable studio moments, revisiting the song 16 years later and what it’s like to hear it reimagined in 2026.

Super8 & Tab on ‘Black Is The New Yellow’

“We first met SØNIN at an afterparty years ago, and our collaboration grew from there. A few years later, he moved to work in one of the rooms at our Helsinki Vibe Studios. The title came from a moment of synesthesia – Miika saw the lead sound as yellow and the “intro drop” bassline as black.

Making the track was quick and intuitive; probably one of the quickest writing sessions we’ve ever had. We already had the drums and bass groove going, and the melody almost wrote itself on top of it. The first time we played it live was a little nerve-wracking, at Ferry Corsten’s big show in the Netherlands. 16 years later, we still love it, and Simon Gregory’s remix lets us bring it back into our sets – well done Simon!”

SØNIN on ‘Black Is The New Yellow’

“I first crossed paths with Super8 & Tab in Helsinki back in the mid-2000s, still a teenager sneaking into clubs. Years later, Miika Kuisma invited me to work in the same studio as them, and that’s how we became closer and stayed friends.

Miika had a chalkboard in the studio, keeping track of the album progress [Super8 & Tab’s ‘Empire’]. One Monday morning I came to the studio and ‘Anton Collab V124340956’ changed to ‘Black Is The New Yellow v.087676’. The Lord works in mysterious ways…

Making the track itself was quick and intuitive: I had a demo with the chords, riff, and vocal chop, Miika added his magic, and it all clicked. It’s incredible to see the song still move people 16 years later. Simon’s remix gives it a beautiful new life.”

Simon Gregory on remixing the classic

“Like many Anjunabeats fans, I listened avidly to Trance Around The World every week. I remember hearing ‘Black Is The New Yellow’ all the way back in 2010 – the emotional melody and vocal chop caught my ear immediately!

It’s scary attempting to remix a classic with as big a fan following as ‘Black Is The New Yellow’! The direction I landed with ultimately was to remind myself of all the big Anjuna events I had danced the nights away to, and try to connect with what made me go crazy on the dancefloor. For me it was always about the big melodic breakdowns to lose yourself in, but it had to have the big filthy bass drop… the one where fists are punching the air and your eyes are closed while you jump around in pure euphoria! I was lucky to have so much inspiration at my fingertips and I hope that I achieved my goal.”

Jono Grant on the new remix

“‘Black Is The New Yellow’ has always been one of my favourites from the early years of Anjunabeats, with its uplifting housey chords in a trance track. Simon’s remix adds a techy update that always goes down well in our sets!'”
