Montreal’s Maara arrives on Spray’s Punctuality imprint with the ‘Drama On’ EP, coming in hot with five frenzied club cuts this October following standout first offerings by Blu:sh and Etari earlier this year. The label also released EPs from Marijn S, Drua, and Dimension 23 and remixes from Luca Lozano, D. Tiffany, and Mor Elian under its previously eponymous ‘Spray’ monicker.

Maara kicks the ‘Drama On’ EP off with ‘What U Do 2 Me’, a high-NRG dance track that packs a real punch, projecting visions of progressive house glory days via a passionate vocal and plenty of rhythm to get the dancefloor bouncing. Next up, title track ‘Drama On’ rolls out a pumping bassline under techy drums, with alien signals alternating with more hypnotic vocals.
‘Sigmund Freud’s Big Day Out’ continues Maara’s ‘Drama On’ EP, introduced via enthralling low-end with a mid-2010s vocal touch above, expertly sliced and sampled between the hard-hitting beats and alerting stabs that follow. ‘Give Me Ecstasy’ then induces a trip with squelchy synth sequences and deep, droning bass while foreboding psychedelic sonics bend the mind. ‘Not My Web, Not My Problem’ closes Maara’s entry on Punctuality with a quick pace, its crisp groove hurrying along whistles and bubbling, oddball synths while a sweaty, sultry vocal keeps the energy flowing.
Canadian artist Maara entered the scene in 2021 with an EP on Priori’s NAFF Recordings. Since then, she has released on prolific labels that proudly fly the 90s prog and trance flag, with quality entries on Roza Terenzi’s Step Ball Chain, Rey Colino’s Kalahari Oyster Cult, and X-Kalay.
