East Coast-based duo STAR SEED are back on Lost In Dreams with their incredible new EP ‘Essence.’ The eight-track effort explores experimental pop, melodic bass, and beyond culminating into a cinematic and spellbinding hero’s journey. The duo has been building anticipation for the release with the previously released standout singles “I’ll Be There” with Nina Sung, and “It’s Just You” alongside Nytrix.

Opening the EP comes “It’s Just You” with singer, songwriter, and producer Nytrix. The track serves as the perfect introduction to the sonic world contained throughout ‘Essence.’ It’s an ethereal love-infused ballad built upon their signature modular sound design. “Sunrise” continues the energy while injecting radiant, warming rays. Living up to its name, the track is a thing of beauty with an underlying energy-inducing sound. Pitched vocals and precision chops take center stage while the sound palette evokes a feeling of pure elation.
Icy piano keys, stirring strings, and an emotive vocal performance from Zoe Moon come together flawlessly to shift the direction on “Falling.” From the slow-burning introduction to the booming drops and fun-loving break, the track is an ever-changing adventure that keeps you craving more at every turn. The project’s midway point is its darkest, welcoming listeners into “The Abyss” with help from Fruit. Breathy whispered vocals bubble to the surface like repressed fears. The questioning lyrics set an uncertain tone that’s amplified by the off-kilter, bass-heavy drops. Forward-thinking while remaining melodic, the track is a formidable exploration of experimental bass.
Connecting with vocalist Crunr, “Whatever It Takes” is an ode to overcoming adversity. From the motivational lyrics to the driving production, this one is a reminder to chase your dreams regardless of any obstacles. The experimental pop sound is catchy while employing an edge of excitement. “Daylight” is another powerful vocal-driven ballad. Charity Vance’s vocals glide over the majestic production, creating an inspiring current of vibes. Intoxication melodies are layered with powerful leads for an uplifting yet introspective aesthetic.
A true standout, “Circles” finds them teaming up with talented singer-songwriter and frequent collaborator Meggie York on the release’s anchor point. Their well-established chemistry is on full display, taking listeners on an epic quest. The pensive lyrics are backed by impactful breakbeat drums, lush acoustic guitar melodies, cinematic string swells, and euphoric, futuristic synth progressions that create a sense of endless expansion. STAR SEED masterfully strip back the track to let Meggie’s vocals breathe before punching things up in the drops to evoke an explosion of raw emotion and growth.

STAR SEED sheds light on the idea that sparked the vision for their new release: “This EP is based on a story we wrote. Before we started making the music for this project, we wrote a book called ‘Essence’ and wanted to tell the story sonically. We reached out to collaborators to work on the EP with us and made sure that the songs told the story, as well. Each song on this EP is actually based on a chapter in the book. This is one of our most ambitious projects yet and seeing it come to life has been unreal.”
Releasing a limited run of physical copies, STAR SEED is publishing the aforementioned book in conjunction with the EP. ‘Essence’ is a compelling read, with eight chapters connected to the respective 8 tracks featured on the release.
