Truncate has remixed Ovum boss Wink before now having established himself as one of the underground’s foremost DJs and producers thanks to a high quality, groove-based sound that has seen him playing at techno institutions such as Movement Festival, Awakenings, fabric, Berghain and many more. Philly’s Wink, meanwhile, continues to innovate on all fronts and remains impossible to pin down stylistically. He does minimal house, acid and techno, all with equal invention, and remains a hugely influential figure in the scene more than 30 years after his debut.
This latest offering from the duo came out of a collaborative studio session at Truncate’s Los Angeles studio. The pair offer up the sublime ‘Possibilities’, a stripped-back deep techno roller that comes alive with magnificent synth patterns that take flight like a bird over the smooth drums. As they shift and drift up top, a magical spell is cast as this most artful of techno tracks plays out.
Remixing is Sardinia’s Elisa Bee, a new school star with credits on the likes of Unknown to the Unknown and Posthuman’s Balkan Vinyl. She collects all forms of music, which she showcases in her radio show and DJ sets and brings real dance floor dynamics here. Her remix is more direct and heads down – the drums hit faster and harder, and the lush original synth phrase is looped more tightly so it hypnotises all who hear it.
This is another standout package of sophisticated techno from Ovum.
