Tenchi, Embody and Moss Kena have joined forces with Grammy Award-winning artist Shaggy to release a brand-new version of the dancehall/reggae icon’s legendary single ‘It Wasn’t Me’, out today.
A combination of euphoric piano chords, an infectious bassline and Moss’ pitch-perfect vocals alongside newly recorded vocals from Shaggy himself, the new version turns ‘It Wasn’t Me’ into a certified dancefloor anthem – while losing none of the sordid magic that made it so special the first time around.
Considered Shaggy’s breakthrough record, the multi-platinum original topped the charts in Australia, Austria, Flanders, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, the UK and the US. It was the best-selling single of 2001 in the UK, selling over 1.15 million copies that year.
As the only diamond-selling dancehall artist in music history, Shaggy has sold more than 40 million albums to date, in addition to landing eight singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and seven albums on the Billboard 200 (including four in the top 40). He is among the top 3 streamed reggae artists of all time on Spotify (along with Bob Marley & Sean Paul).
Fresh off a Grammy Award nomination for producing and co-writing Spice’s groundbreaking album, Shaggy, managed by Martin Kierszenbaum/Cherrytree Music Company, recently released a dancehall single, “Mi Nuh Know” and is in the studio, recording a new album slated for release in late May.
No stranger to dance music, Tenchi has written and produced hits for some of the biggest artists on the planet, such as David Guetta, Galantis, The Chainsmokers, R3HAB, Jonas Blue, Don Diablo, Robin Schulz and Steve Aoki. Released last year, his debut single ‘Beautiful’ was selected as MistaJam’s ‘Fresh New Beat’ on Capital Dance.
Embody is perhaps best-known for producing and co-writing the Tungevaag and Kid Ink single ‘Ride With Me’, which reached the ‘Top 40’ in France and Norway. He also produced and co-wrote two OMI singles: ‘Rollercoaster’and ‘Crazy With Somebody’, as well as co-producing ‘Don’t Hate The Playa’ by Tyga. Aside from producing and songwriting for others, his own output as Embody has amassed nearly 200 million combined plays.
Gigging relentlessly as a teen, Moss Kena grabbed the attention of the tastemaker world with his first release: a stunning rendition of Kendrick Lamar’s ‘These Walls’. Kendrick himself gave it the seal of approval. It was further supported by the likes of Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, MistaJam, Sir Elton John, DJ Target and Ebro Darden etc. Since then, Moss has gone on to write with and collaborate on some wonderful music with the likes of Bastille, Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist Rapsody, Toddla T, Ben Pearce, Toby Romeo, Miraa May and many more, with another highlight being last year’s collaboration on Purple Disco Machine’s hit song ‘Fireworks’ that Moss co-wrote, which topped the German and Italian airplay charts and was the most played song on Italian radio in 2021.
