Mixed by Steven Durose (Oceansize) and mastered by the legendary Frank Arkwright (Mogwai) at Abbey Road Studio, ‘An Unshakable Demon’ features crushed, trip-hop drum machines that lock into a dingy, Goldfrapp-esque fuzzy and my falsetto vocals floating over bewitched, down-tempo machinery. I’m trying to convey the subtle horror of wrestling with self doubt in a social media dominated vacant, post-Covid world where love isn’t currency, but I’m selling cheap.”
The Holy Road have released their industrial collection of synth-heavy songs as they unveil debut EP An Unshakable Demon.
Mixed by legendary engineer Steven Durose (Oceansize, Vennart, Amplifier) & mastered at Abbey Road by the iconic Frank Arkwright (Mogwai), An Unshakable Demon is a bristling record tackling themes of mental health heightened by the pandemic, and exacerbated by social media.
The Holy Road is a solo project by former To Bury A Ghost frontman, Jonathan Stolber, who confronts issues we all face in reemerging into a post-COVID world. From the shoegaze synth-heavy opener ‘Title Sequence’, and previous single Coming Up For Air abrasively unfurling with malignant intent, to the progressive instrumentals of the Explosions In The Sky-inspired closer Against / Social / Media, An Unshakable Demon effortlessly undulates from genre to genre throughout the eclectic six track EP.
Fresh off the back of his Nils Frahm curated Piano Day release in aid of tinychanges.com (to help raise mental health awareness), Stolber spent “the most ridiculous year of our lives so far” locked in his studio putting the final touches to his first EP.
Having collected numerous individual awards including twice nominated BBC Introducing artist as well as being selected by the BBC to represent Northamptonshire music at their Abbey Road Masterclass Session, Stolber put all his efforts into his passion project, re-emerging under the guise of The Holy Road.
Remotely collaborating with a cavalcade of his favourite musicians during lockdown, including Chris Duffin (Drahla, Virginia Wing), James Saddington (Eaststrikewest, Bridesmaid) and Ben Weedon (Maybeshewill), The Holy Road is now eager to share the evocative, diverse sound of An Unshakable Demon with the world.
