October 17 holds a special place in the hearts of Tragically Hip fans. It’s the day in 2017 that Canada said goodbye to Gord Downie. This year, on that same date, fans in seven cities will gather to sing his songs, raise their glasses, and do something he’d be proud of: raise money to help people living with cancer.
GEDfest 2026 brings 13 shows to 12 cities across Canada and, for the first time, the United States, running October 16, 17, 21 and 24. Named for Gordon Edgar Downie, the grassroots movement brings together Tragically Hip tribute acts, volunteers and fans to celebrate Gord’s life and legacy, with every chapter raising money for cancer organizations in its own community.
The numbers tell a remarkable story. GEDfest has already donated $732,000 to local cancer charities, and this year’s goal is $425,000, enough to push the total past $1 million. Every one of its 12 chapters is run entirely by volunteers.
“GEDfest is a grassroots musical fundraiser inspired by Gord Downie, the music of The Tragically Hip, and the songs that brought Canadians together,” the organizers say. “It started as one Calgary gathering in 2018 and has grown into 13 events in 12 cities across Canada and the United States. Fans come to sing along, remember Gord and raise money for cancer organizations in their own communities.”
It all began with one fan and one idea. Founder Keith Dyck launched GEDfest in Calgary in 2018, inspired by another Canadian hero. Terry Fox showed the country how communities could come together to fight cancer through the Marathon of Hope, and Dyck set out to build something in that same spirit: an annual grassroots gathering that honours Gord through music, raises money for those affected by cancer and feels distinctly Canadian.
Nine years later, that one night has grown into a coast-to-coast movement. The mission is as big as the music. GEDfest’s vision is “to realize a world without cancer through an annual, coast-to-coast community driven movement honoring the life and legacy of Gordon Edgar Downie and the music of The Tragically Hip while raising funds for local cancer charities and creating UNFORGETTABLE moments to those who need it most.”
The lineup is a celebration of the Hip’s enduring reach. The Strictly Hip will launch the first ever U.S. chapter at The CAZ in Buffalo. In Toronto, 40 Hours Over and Grace2 take the stage at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern. Trickle Down plays three nights across Calgary and Regina, and fans from St. John’s to Vancouver can catch acts including Velvet Sons, Wyman, Wheat Kings, Radio Tragedy, Hipnautical, Bush Party, The Hip Replacements, Ragged Rust, Little Bones, Chris Henderson, Don Law Band, Phantom Power, Judith Morrissey, Music @ Work, Gift Shop, Main Street Exiles and Kates Outlaw.
There are plenty of ways to help. Fans can find a chapter near them, follow it on social media, buy tickets, tell their friends, or make a direct donation at gedfest.ca.
Every chorus sung, every ticket bought and every dollar raised keeps the music playing and the hope alive. On October 17, nine years after Canada lost one of its greatest voices, fans across the country will turn their grief into something beautiful, together.
