Venus Volcanism ‘Rizitiko’ is the second release on Optimo Music sub-label, Weaponise Your Sound curated by Kristina McCormick of NTS Diet Clinic show. Venus Volcanism is musician and electronic artist Rena Rasouli presenting her first solo mini-album, which uses traditional folk songs of her native Crete as a basis.

‘Rizitiko’ evolved from Rasouli’s thesis titled “The music performances based in traditional dialect focuses on the healing ability of sound”. The songs were created and sung by folk troubadours. Expanding on these oeuvres, Rasouli seized on the idea that the melodic use of voice is the oldest form of therapy in human culture. This primary and ritualistic material was intertwined with electronic and natural ambient soundscapes. The resulting compositions express the omnipresent sensations and emotions that play a key role in the healing process whilst communicating an intense connection to the collective unconscious. Traditionally sung by men, there are numerous reasons to believe that many of the songs were initially created by women. To sing them in a female voice projects a different approach to the traditional rendition – one closer to that of a lullaby.
On ‘Rizitiko’, Rena Rasouli aka Venus Volcanism says: “It is as if sung from a pregnant mother to her unborn child. For it the melody and the rhythm of these songs the long exhalation of the breath, the specific tones and vibrations, that affect her body, offering her seed a direct, resonating connection to our universe”
Venus Volcanism is a post-punk, dark wave, lo-fi music project inspired by the planet Venus and by the powerful feelings which are burning like volcanic lava in a
human soul. The surface of Venus is dominated by volcanic features and has more volcanoes than any other planet in the solar system. The human soul looks like a volcano – sometimes sleeping, other times awake and then reactions, explosions and other paradox things start happening.
