Combining over-the-top production, innovative, groundbreaking themed décors and invitations, quirky hosts and the world’s top DJs, Avaland “A World at Night” returns to where it all started at House of Blues in Boston as it celebrates its 25th anniversary with a special event. Set for June 17, Avaland’s anniversary fete “Make America Gyrate Again” will feature sets from legendary DJ Danny Tenaglia and Mike Swells along with original Avaland residents Nailz and Manolo, décor from Avaland designer John Dellarocco, and over two dozen performers.
The night will also celebrate the national release of Avaland creator Steve Adelman’s book “Nocturnal Admissions: Behind the Scenes at Tunnel, Limelight, Avalon and Other Legendary Nightclubs” (Santa Monica Press), where he documents his three decades in nightlife with largely humorous, behind-the-scenes stories. “Avaland is well represented in the book,” notes Adelman, “with what went on at Avaland, those stories just wrote themselves.”
The House of Blues location, home to the original Avalon, was the site of the 1997 launch of Avaland which featured DJ Louie Vega, a futuristic Alice in Avaland set design and performers including a drag Alice, a “bad” Hatter, and a modern day Tweedle-Dee and Dum outfitted in four-inch heels and platinum wigs.
Between 1997-2008 Avaland at Avalon in Boston hosted a who’s who in electronic dance music along with weekly themes such as: “The Wizard of Odds,” “The Electric Pussycat Swingers Club” and the “Avalettes Christmas Spectacular” hosted by members of the Wack Pack from the Howard Stern Show. In 2003, Avaland launched in Hollywood and NYC, and in 2008 began a six-year run at Avalon in Singapore. Since its inception, there have been over 1500 editions of Avaland, taking place in US and Asia, attracting over 1.75 million fans.
“Avaland is really a collection of all the best elements I’ve experienced that make up the ultimate large nightclub experience,” says Steve Adelman, “it’s the creative décor and themes from the NYC’s Roxy, the quirky hosts and performers from Limelight combined with the DJ experience at clubs such as Twilo. When combined with the over-the-top production of a John Lyons’ lighting and sound system, you’ve got a recipe for not only success, but all the elements for sustainability.”
