Yndling is the dream-pop project of Norwegian artist Silje Espevik. Through delicate soundscapes and oscillating synths, Yndling invites listeners into a place of escapism and resonance. Returning with her third single of 2021, ‘Out of My Way’ is a darkly emotive and introspective offering that reflects on the feeling of letting go in a relationship. ‘Out of My Way’ effortlessly blends brooding chords and glistening synths that compliment Yndling’s delicate vocals. This single is part of Yndling’s debut EP which will see the light in the coming months.
“It’s about that stage in a relationship where you are half in, half out, and can’t really find a way to make things work or to let go properly. In a situation like that, it’s my experience that one part will get over things first, and kind of leave the other part behind. Meeting up again, and realising that the other person has a totally different view of the situation and is totally over it, is super hard. The title and hook of the song comes from that feeling – the feeling of having gone «out of your way» to please someone and make things work, thinking you did it together, and realising that they never put in the same effort and didn’t care as much as you did when it came down to it. That sort of thing is a real mindfuck to me, how two humans may perceive a situation so differently. It can make me feel so inferior and out of place.”
Yndling’s music is both honest and raw, wrapped in layers of sound and harmonies. A project born during Covid, with hushed vocals and a melancholic feel, Yndling offer introspection and honesty in her songwriting.
She explains, “I think there is so much power in letting a feeling or experience be all-consuming, just for a little while, and I really need that to write music.” Yndling has an understanding that when writing, it is important to “throw away the fear of being too honest or maybe telling a truth that’s not recognised by everyone else and that may feel a little too close for comfort.” Yndling takes influences from artists and bands such as Beach House, Tops, Crumb, Hatchie and Mazzy Star.
Yndling made an explosive debut on the music scene in 2021, with the release of her singles ‘Childish Fear’ in February and ‘Cotton Candy Skies’ in May. The latter achieved recognition in the “Fresh Finds Indie” Spotify official playlist. Yndling’s releases also gained support from the likes of The Line of Best Fit, Earmilk, Rolling Stone and Atwood Magazine to name a few.
