50 dead in terror attack on gay nightclub in Orlando

The deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history was perpetrated last night at Pulse, a gay night club in Orlando, Florida. According to Orlando Police Chief John Mina, fifty people were killed and fifty-three more were injured inside the club after a shooter opened fire on the crowded space. The gunman was shot and killed by police. The suspect has been identified as Omar Mateen of Port St. Lucie, Fla and was carrying an assault rifle and a hand gun.

The situation began at 2:02 a.m. at which time three police officers engaged the suspect in a gun battle outside the club. Shortly after the suspect entered the club, where a hostage situation unfolded until a SWAT team stormed the club at 5 a.m.

“It’s appears he was organized and well-prepared,” the chief said, adding that the shooter had an assault-type weapon, a handgun and “some type of (other) device on him.”

The FBI is already investigating this as a possible act of terrorism. Possibly domestic or international. It is also not clear if the shooter acted alone and or if he had any connections with radical Islam.
