US DJ/producer Breakline makes his label debut on OMRI.’s (pronounced OMRI dot) Collecting Dots Records with his ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ EP, a two-track release channelling the rhythmic traditions of New Orleans through a contemporary house music lens.
The title track ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ draws from the deep-pocket funk of The Meters and the electronic jazz-funk explorations of Herbie Hancock, pairing syncopated rhythms, chopped vocal phrases, and a wonky synth lead into a groove-driven club record. Meanwhile, ‘Do You Wanna Dance’ takes inspiration from Mardi Gras Indian traditions and Bob James’ ‘Take Me to the Mardi Gras’, blending whistles, tambourines, trumpet melodies, and call-and-response motifs with a playful house framework
After moving to New Orleans to study music, Breakline became fascinated by the city’s ability to blur boundaries between genres, cultures, and eras. Drawing from that spirit, his productions translate the swing, soul, and rhythmic traditions of New Orleans into modern dance music, balancing live musical ideas with electronic production. Arriving as the latest addition to the Collecting Dots catalogue, the EP continues the momentum of a label that, despite being little more than a year and a half into its journey, has quickly built a reputation for consistently delivering standout club records while carving out its own identity.
