Orlando Voorn has long provided a key link between European house and techno and their roots in the US. The Dutch veteran is a prolific artist who has helmed several vital labels, played every major club and festival in the world and turned out many underground hits over 30+ years on esteemed labels like KMS and Metroplex under various aliases. Voorn proves he is on form as ever with his latest offering on p-ertönen, the three-track ‘Slasher’ EP, comprising three sublime housers.
Opener ‘Funky Bastard’ instantly shows off Voorn’s ability to marry rugged machine sounds with musical synths. It’s stripped-back and raw but alive with colour and character thanks to the deft sound designs. ‘Slasher’ is a wild and attention-grabbing cut with chunky and weighty house drums, razor-sharp hi-hats and squirming, alien-sounding leads that will energise any dancefloor – it’s a perfect union of hypnotic and loopy drums and freeform synth modulation. ‘Da Music _Remix’ closes out the EP in style with nearly eight minutes of brilliantly soul-drenched house fusing deep drums, catchy rhythms and trumpet stabs that bring the good vibes.
