EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH : DJ Share

Ibiza-based DJ and producer SHARE (Sharon Pieksma) is spinning her way across the globe, from WooMoon Ibiza and SXM Festival to a mind-blowing set in Antarctica with Deer Jade. With releases on Abacadabra and Crosstown Rebels, a growing global fanbase, and eco-conscious beats (she’s an ambassador for Bye Bye Plastic), SHARE isn’t just making music, she’s making waves. We caught up with her to talk sound, sustainability, and how it feels to drop a track at the edge of the world.

Tell us about your journey so far, since you started out more than 11 years ago, has it been the rollercoaster it looks like on social media?

SHARE: Honestly, it all started pretty casually, with my friends back in Rotterdam, my hometown. A bunch of my close friends are amazing visual artists, and they had this super inspiring art gallery where we’d always hang. There was a DJ setup in the space, so while they were painting or creating, we’d be playing music, and just vibing off each other’s energy. It wasn’t about becoming a DJ back then, it was just about sharing music, being in a creative flow together.

I think I was around 19 when I really learned how to mix properly so yes that’s about 11 years ago now. But since, I went from those arty jam sessions to playing on beaches in South America and even Antarctica… yeah, I’d say it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster!

You have played gigs in so many regions by now; from Europe to South America and the Middle East, but yes Antarctica sounds pretty surreal. How was that experience?

SHARE: Wow yes, that was a bizarrely amazing experience! The whole trip lasted 8 days, with 3 days at sea each way crossing the infamous Drake Passage from Ushuaia to Antarctica. We were sailing through waves up to 6–8 meters high, and pretty much the entire group, including Jade and me, were so seasick. But reaching Antarctica made it all so worth it.

Playing music there, surrounded by penguins, whales, and orcas, was absolutely magical. It felt surreal, especially with the daylight never ending. The sun never fully set; instead, it would slowly dip to the horizon and then rise again, casting these dreamlike, never-ending golden hours.

It was honestly one of the most beautiful trips I’ve ever been on. I even got to celebrate my 30th birthday during the journey, which made it extra special. I’m incredibly grateful to have been invited to play alongside bestie Deer Jade, an experience I’ll never forget.

Does all the traveling influence the way you produce music?

SHARE: Definitely. Traveling is a huge source of inspiration for me. But actually it’s not even about the places I travel for my gigs. When I travel just to experience somewhere new, soaking in the atmosphere, and having the space to explore, that’s when I really feel inspired.

I love those moments when I get to just hang out and listen to other artists, especially at places like AfricaBurn or Burning Man. There, you hear completely different sounds, often from artists you’ve never even heard of, and that really sparks something in me.

I think my music always starts with a feeling. I’m super driven by emotion, and when I experience something powerful, whether it’s a place, a set, or just a mood, I try to translate that into sound. So yeah, it’s not just about where I go, but how it makes me feel. And then I try to turn that into something you can dance to.

Are there any of your own tracks that are particularly special to you?

SHARE: Yes, there are two that really stand out for me.

One is a track called “Moon.” It’s very different from my other productions, much deeper in sound, and it came together super spontaneously. I even used my own voice in it, which was a really raw and personal touch. The message is about reaching for the light, reaching for the moon; quite literally what I say in the vocal. It’s simple, but it carries a lot of meaning for me.

The other is “Oh Please,” which I released on Crosstown Rebels. That was a huge moment for me because it’s one of the labels I’ve admired for years. To have my music out on such an iconic platform felt like a dream come true. The track was also a beautiful collaboration with a rapper from South Africa I met years ago, so it was special on a lot of levels,  both creatively and personally. It’s amazing how connections from the past can come full circle like that.

Some of your tracks also have an environmental message, like your first release “Avatar”. Why is it so important to you to convey this with your music?

SHARE: For me, music has always been more than just sound, it’s a powerful platform to inspire and raise awareness. That’s why including environmental messages in my work feels so natural. My track “Avatar,” came out on a Bye Bye Plastic x Abracadabra compilation that focused on protecting our oceans. It was such a beautiful way to start my journey as a producer, using music to stand for something bigger.

As artists, especially in the electronic music scene, we have this incredible opportunity to reach people, not just with the music we play, but with the choices we make behind the scenes too.

That’s why I use things like an eco rider when I perform, requesting no plastic in the booth, only glass bottles, and encouraging venues to think about alternatives. Sometimes, promoters just don’t know the options that are out there, and by making small requests, we spark big conversations.

I’ve been part of the Bye Bye Plastic movement for about five years now, and I’m really proud to support what they’re doing, from educational tools to full-on eco events. It’s all about creating a ripple effect in our industry. If we can party with purpose, why wouldn’t we?
