ILLUSIONIZE and Brazilian duo FEZZO have released “Living On My Own,” a dance floor-focused rework of Freddie Mercury’s solo classic and the first release on ILLUSIONIZE’s new ACCANTO imprint.

Landing squarely in the Indie Tech camp, Beatport’s newest genre, which begins its first rollout today, the track pulls Mercury’s unmistakable vocal into a heavier modern club frame. FEZZO first started playing with the idea after a suggestion from a fan, and their groove-led take quickly began to take shape. They then brought in ILLUSIONIZE to co-produce, adding his low-end weight and dance floor instincts to the arrangement. The trio worked through more than 10 versions before landing on the right balance between nostalgia and peak-time impact.

Mercury first released “Living On My Own” in 1985 during his Mr. Bad Guy era. The original single peaked at No. 50 in the UK, but a posthumous 1993 remix gave it a major second life, reaching No. 1 and spending two weeks at the top of the charts. More than three decades later, it’s back on the dance floor in another fresh form.

“This track has a very special meaning for us,” says FEZZO, who have been road-testing it for months. ILLUSIONIZE calls it “one of the best reworks I’ve had the pleasure of being part of.”

It’s also a strong opening statement for ACCANTO, ILLUSIONIZE’s new label and party series built around a more collaborative, side-by-side approach to dance music. “Living On My Own” puts that idea into practice from the very first release.
