Kingdom & Dawn Richard ‘Infrared’
LA’s Fade to Mind unveils the new collaborative Infrared EP from highly respected producer Kingdom featuringD∆WN, which is out now. The 4-track project is the result of the meeting of Dawn and Fade to Mind. They recently shared the lead single “HONEST,“ a sultry, boundary-less blend of jungle and R&B that swiftly receivedPitchfork‘s “Best New Music” stamp last week.
Now they share the full EP, expanding the themes of love and independence over a hi-definition musical landscape. From the pulsating bass and teasing breakbeats of “HONEST” to the dystopian shimmer of “How I Get It” these records inhabit a complex emotive realm that only D∆WN could pilot. A songwriter in her own right, she rarely collaborates with others, making Infrared a special example of a chemistry that drew Fade and her together. Produced entirely by Kingdom with co-writing and lyrics by Prince Will (who also worked closely writing CUT 4 ME with Kelela), Infrared is the latest electronic communication from the Fade To Mind world, home to mind-stretching releases by Rizzla, MikeQ and more.
D∆WN, aka Dawn Richard, is one of music’s most distinctive voices and songwriters since her emergence in 2004. Now a solo artist, she continues to cultivate a vision of her own, positioning her as a powerhouse force straddling genres. Her breakout album Blackheart was ranked as one of 2015’s best by Pitchfork, Rolling Stone,Vogue, FACT, LA Times, Spin, Rap Up and many more. She most recently released her second single “Not Above That” from RED*emp*tion, her third solo album and the final part of a trilogy (with Goldenheart and Blackheart), out later this year. She also recently kicked off YouTube’s first ever “live 360-degree” video performance series and shared that she will be upping the ante with her next music video by presenting a fully immersive virtual reality experience.
L.A.-based producer Kingdom has built considerable influence with both his discography and the output from his Fade to Mind imprint. He first began to make a name for himself in New York City via a series of mixtapes and club nights; eschewing traditional genre limitations while adeptly combining elements of grime, house, and underground club music with currents of hip-hop and R&B, developing a hybridized and potent strain of dance music. After a series of international tours and critically acclaimed EPs on Fool’s Gold and Night Slugs he founded Fade to Mind in 2010, and soon after garnered heavy attention for his work on Kelela’s CUT 4 ME and it’s breakout single “Bank Head”. His unique approach has led to explosive collaborations with artists such as NguzuNguzu, Sza, and Syd Tha Kid.
