Major Lazer’s Jillionaire Join Forces With Soca Star Bunji Garlin on ‘Television’

Bunji Garlin, the 37 year old soca singer whose 2013 single “Differentology” became one of the genre’s few crossover successes (he even played Hot 97’s landmark hip-hop festival Summer Jam), is on his way to more intergenre accolades with a little help from fellow Trinidadian artist Jillionaire — best known as one third of dance powerhouse Major Lazer.

Together, along with New York producer Richie Beretta, they’ve come together for brand-new single “Television. The edgy, soca/hip-hop/dance hybrid tune features Bunji showing off a flow that might inspire a little nostalgia: “It kinda reminds me of something Flipmode Squad might have done,” Garlin tells Billboard. Similarly, Jillionaire describes the song’s ragga vibe as “in theBusta Rhymes [who is cited in the lyrics]/Fu-Schnickens attitude of the late ’90s.”

“As a soca artist, doing these kinds of things isn’t considered normal — but I’m ready to have some fun with it,” Bunji adds. “I’ve been a fan of Bunji’s freestyling since the first time I saw him perform, back in the early 2000s. We wanted to make a song that showcased his lyrical approach,” Jillionaire says of the collaboration.

Listen to “Television” below, and look for a seven-song Feel-Up Records (Jillionaire’s label) EP by the two artists to drop this summer.
