An eight-track release, Music Ruined My Life is a personal, introspective affair that sees Moods shift away from the collaborative work that has defined much of his previous output. The LP opens modestly with the restrained beauty of ‘Deeper Waters’ and ‘Let It Slide’, before navigating psychedelic territories on the hypnotic ‘The Necessary Change’. Next up is Septembersingle ‘Music Saved My Life’, recorded live in the city of Leiden with a full band during the peak of the pandemic, it ebbs and flows around supple grooves, delicate guitar licks and a touch of brass. Moving to the second half of the LP is upbeat and suitably-titled track ‘Ecstasy’,the gentle jazz licks and signature grooves of ‘Talk About It’, and the blissed-out tropicália of ‘Push Pull’. Closing things out, ‘Return To 4ever’ ensures the album finishes with grace and elegance.

Music Ruined My Life precedes a London show at The Garage alongside friends and Dutch music scene contemporaries Kraak & Smaak on 23rd October, while there is also a mini documentary about the project that drops on the same day as the album itself.

It marks the follow-up to 2018 debut album Zoom Out, a well-received LP that has amassed more than 30 million global streams and was glowingly described by online platform Sidekick Music as “elevating the Moods sound through a collection of tracks that defy any one particular genre or sound”.

Drawing influences from acclaimed instrumental hip-hop titans such as Pete RockJ Dilla and NujabesMoods is the moniker of Dutch producer Nick Lubbersen. At the intersection of electronic and contemporary R&B, his sound is based around lo-fi flavours and soulful undertones, and has been supported by the likes of BBC Radio 1Sirius XM and KCRW.

A captivating, diverse collection of tracks, Music Ruined My Life is the work of a gifted artist who continues to grow with every release.
