Setting the stage for listeners, Nejvex offers fans a sample of what to expect, saying, “The ‘OUTLAW’ EP is my biggest project to date. It merges old-school hip-hop, phonk, and my heavy bass music sound, creating a new fusion of genres across different BPMs.”
“EXPERT” is a tone-setting opener that blends laidback hip-hop swagger with banging dubstep textures. A nostalgic vocal sample speaks to the magic of music while vinyl crackles add a layer of warmth. Old-school rap melodies and scratched vocals take things back to the golden age of hip-hop while laser synths drift into powerful drum builds. Chopped-up hip-hop vox collide with squishy lysergic leads, metallic-laden percussion, and breakbeat drums in the first drop, blurring the lines between gritty and breezy. The second half sees Nejvex picking up the pace with a heart-racing finale that intertwines frenetic drums and crunchy low-end, without feeling disconnected from the song’s core.
Taking listeners to the “GUTTER” comes the in-your-face anthem. Built around iconic West Coast rap bars, the vocals offer a menacing yet addictive hook that’s looped, bent, and expanded with expert precision. Exotic melodic flourishes add a sense of mystique, while phonk melodies inject a drift-ready feel. The drops are explosive, unleashing a barrage of high-powered lasers, rumbling low-end, and snapping drum programming. The ever-evolving cut gets wilder with time, as the producer flexes his sound design chops with a retooled second drop that’s masterfully chaotic.
Precision cuts and laid-back ‘90s hip-hop soul lead the dance on “REAL GOOD.” Speaker-filling 808s slide beneath precision snares and crips hi-hats rolls, giving the track a smooth but powerful edge. The switchups hit like a brick, exchanging the smooth grooves for barrages of party-starting dubstep-inspired progressions that flow back and forth between the wavy soundscape at its foundation. From skull-splitting to easy-riding, “REAL GOOD” is dripping with an awe-inspiring dichotomy.
“UNDERTAKER” is a hard-hitting dubstep cut that weaves together fast-paced laser synths, frenetic metallic clanks, hardwave-tinged melodies, and a growling low-end, all delivered with chaotic percussion at breakneck speed. It’s a seamless blend of aggression and melody, showcasing Nejvex’s ability to infuse genre influences without compromising his distinct bass-heavy edge. The project’s lead single is arguably the most antagonistic and epic, offering a futuristic assault of deadly proportions.
Capping off the project in style comes the fittingly titled “UPTOWN PHONK.” Classic drift phonk melodies drive the track forward with an addictive sway. Pitched and chopped Memphis rap vocals insert a grittiness that’s expanded upon by commanding trap drums and fiery brass. Alarm sounds ring off before things get hectic, as Nejvex hits the nitrous oxide to floor the track with a face-screwing hard phonk drop that evolves into some destructive dubstep, all with finesse and ill intentions. Fusing phonk, trap, and dubstep, “UPTOWN PHONK” puts a bow on the incredible sonic medley that is ‘OUTLAW.’
Nejvex is a Los Angeles transplant by way of Czechia who is cementing his status in the bass scene by blending distinct melodies with chest-pounding bottom-end. He was selected by SLANDER as the winner of their prestigious ICON Collective scholarship and continues his journey with the duo following an official remix of “Watch Over Me” featuring JT Roach, and the two-track offering ‘Hyperion / I Want Your Love,’ which arrived via their Heaven Sent imprint. Following his move to the U.S., he has quickly become a favorite among heavyweights in the scene, drawing support from Virtual Riot, Au5, Sharks, Chime, Ace Aura, and Skybreak.
Switching lanes at high speeds, ‘OUTLAW’ sees Nejvex swerving from dubstep to trap, phonk, hip-hop, and hardwave with expert precision.
