UK club Dance Tunnel to close its doors in 2017
Gentrification – mixed with lowered rates of millennials going out on the weekends – has translated into a drastic change of London’s nightlife landscape. Iconic clubs all over the city are shutting their doors, with a total of 35% of the city’s grassroots music venues having been closed for business since 2007.
Unfortunately, another beloved venue has met its demise: Dance Tunnel in Dalston, which owners have attributed to licensing issues which have “made it impossible for us to get the hours we need to make Dance Tunnel sustainable in the long term.” The club, which has grown significantly in popularity in recent years, will shut down officially in August this year.
Luckily, the city’s government has recognized the dire nightlife situation unfolding. The UK culture minister began urging clubs to apply for arts funding in fall last year, while the mayor of London recently divulged plans of a “Night Time Commission” designed to keep businesses afloat.
